How to Change the Slide Background in PowerPoint (Colour, Gradient or Picture)

Everything in the background lives in one pane: solid colours, gradients, photos, textures and patterns. The pane applies to the current slide by default, with one button to push it to every slide.
Quick reference
| What you want | How |
|---|---|
| Open the background pane | Right-click the slide → Format Background |
| Solid colour | Solid fill → pick a colour |
| Gradient | Gradient fill → choose preset or set the stops |
| Picture | Picture or texture fill → Insert |
| Every slide | Apply to All |
| Back to the theme's background | Reset Background |
1. Open Format Background
Right-click an empty part of the slide and choose Format Background, or go to Design → Format Background. A pane opens on the right. Whatever you choose applies to the current slide only until you click Apply to All at the bottom.
2. A solid colour
Choose Solid fill and pick a colour. Use one from the theme row so it matches the rest of the deck. Dark backgrounds with light text work well in dim rooms; light backgrounds are better for printing and bright offices.
3. A gradient
Choose Gradient fill. The Preset gradients drop-down gives you ready-made ones based on the theme. For your own, use the Gradient stops bar: click a stop to set its colour, drag it along to change where the blend happens, and set Type to Linear or Radial. Two colours close in tone look far classier than a rainbow.
4. A picture
1. Choose Picture or texture fill.
2. Click Insert → From a File (or Stock Images).
3. The photo fills the slide.
2. Click Insert → From a File (or Stock Images).
3. The photo fills the slide.
Then make the text readable:
• Drag the Transparency slider to fade the picture (30–60% is typical).
• Or leave the picture full-strength and put a semi-transparent dark rectangle behind the text: Insert → Shapes → Rectangle, Shape Fill black, then Format Shape → Fill → Transparency 40%.
• Tile picture as texture repeats a small image instead of stretching it.

5. Hide the theme's graphics
Some themes have lines or shapes on every slide. Tick Hide background graphics in the pane to remove them from this slide without changing the theme.
6. Apply to every slide, or undo
Apply to All pushes the background to the whole presentation. Reset Background takes the current slide back to the theme's default.
Troubleshooting
The background changed on one slide only. That's the default. Click Apply to All.
The picture is stretched. Use a photo with the same proportions as the slide (16:9), or tick Tile picture as texture for patterns. Alternatively insert the picture as a normal object, crop it to the slide and send it to the back.
I can't select the background picture. Backgrounds aren't objects. Change or remove them in Format Background.
Wrapping up
Right-click → Format Background. Solid, gradient or picture, add transparency so the text stays readable, Apply to All if it's for the whole deck. Reset Background if you change your mind.
