How to Convert a PDF to Word for Free (No Website Needed)

Need to edit a PDF? You probably don't need an online converter or paid software. Microsoft Word can open a PDF and turn it into an editable document — and it does it on your own computer, so private files stay private.
Quick reference
| What you want | How |
|---|---|
| Open a PDF in Word | File → Open → choose the PDF → OK |
| Save as Word | File → Save As → Word Document (.docx) |
| Back to PDF | File → Save As → PDF |
1. Open the PDF in Word
1. Open Word.
2. Go to File → Open → Browse.
3. Choose your PDF. (Change the file type to All Files or PDF Files if you can't see it.)
4. Word says it will convert the PDF to an editable document. Click OK.
2. Go to File → Open → Browse.
3. Choose your PDF. (Change the file type to All Files or PDF Files if you can't see it.)
4. Word says it will convert the PDF to an editable document. Click OK.
You can also right-click the PDF in File Explorer and choose Open with → Word.
2. Edit it
The PDF opens as a normal Word document. Change text, fix typos, delete pages, add your own content.
3. Save it as a Word document
Go to File → Save As and choose Word Document (.docx). Your original PDF is untouched.
4. Turn it back into a PDF
When you've finished editing, File → Save As (or Export) and choose PDF.
What converts well — and what doesn't
Works well: letters, reports, simple forms and documents that are mainly text.
May shift around: complex layouts with lots of columns, text boxes, tables across pages, footnotes or unusual fonts. Always check the result before you send it.
Scanned PDFs: if the PDF is really a photo of a page, Word tries to recognise the text, but results depend on the scan quality. A clean, straight, high-resolution scan works best.
Why not use a free website?
Many free converters upload your file to their servers. For bank statements, contracts or anything personal, converting in Word keeps it on your own computer.
On a Mac
Word for Mac doesn't open PDFs for editing in the same way. Try Word for the web (in OneDrive: upload the PDF, open it, then Edit in Word), or open the PDF in the free Google Docs.
Troubleshooting
Word says the PDF is protected. The PDF has a password or editing restrictions. You'll need the owner's password.
Fonts look different. The original fonts aren't installed on your computer. Select all and choose a font you have.
Wrapping up
File → Open, pick the PDF, click OK. Free, fast and private.
