How to Create Slides From a Word Document in PowerPoint

You've written the report; now you need the presentation. Don't retype it. If the Word document uses headings, PowerPoint can turn it into slides in a few seconds — each heading becomes a slide title and the points under it become bullets.
Quick reference
| What you want | How |
|---|---|
| Prepare the document | Use Heading 1 for slide titles, Heading 2 for bullets |
| Make the slides | Home → New Slide ▾ → Slides from Outline |
| Let Word do it (Microsoft 365) | In Word: File → Export → Export to PowerPoint presentation |
| Fix a slide that landed oddly | Home → Reset |
| Slides to Word | File → Export → Create Handouts |
1. Set up the Word document
PowerPoint reads Word's heading styles, not the text size:
• Heading 1 → a new slide, using this text as the title.
• Heading 2 → a bullet point on that slide.
• Heading 3 → a sub-bullet.
• Normal text is ignored.
• Heading 2 → a bullet point on that slide.
• Heading 3 → a sub-bullet.
• Normal text is ignored.
Open your document, click each slide title and apply Heading 1 from the Home tab (Ctrl + Alt + 1), then Heading 2 (Ctrl + Alt + 2) to each point. Delete or demote paragraphs you don't want on slides. Save and close the document.
2. Slides from Outline
1. In PowerPoint, open the presentation (or your template) the slides should go into.
2. Home → New Slide ▾ → Slides from Outline.
3. Choose the Word document and click Insert.
2. Home → New Slide ▾ → Slides from Outline.
3. Choose the Word document and click Insert.
One slide per Heading 1, bullets beneath. They use your current theme.
3. Tidy up
The text arrives at whatever size Word used. Select all the new slides in the thumbnail pane and click Home → Reset — every slide snaps to its layout with the theme fonts. Then trim: a slide should have a handful of short bullets, not the whole paragraph from the report.
4. Export to PowerPoint from Word
With Microsoft 365 and the document saved on OneDrive, Word can do the whole job with a design: File → Export → Export to PowerPoint presentation, choose a design theme, and Word builds a presentation with layouts, icons and speaker notes containing the original text. It's the quickest route for a good-looking first draft — then open it in PowerPoint and edit.
5. Use Outline View to write in PowerPoint
Prefer to write the words first? View → Outline View shows just the text of every slide. Type a title, press Enter for a new slide, Tab to make a line a bullet, Shift + Tab to make it a new slide. It's the fastest way to draft a deck.
6. Go the other way: slides to Word
File → Export → Create Handouts → Create Handouts, then choose a layout such as Notes next to slides or Outline only. Word opens with the slides laid out as a document you can edit and print.
Troubleshooting
I get one slide with everything on it, or no slides. The document doesn't use heading styles. Apply Heading 1 and Heading 2 in Word and try again.
Slides from Outline can't open the file. The document is open in Word. Close it first. Very old .doc files may also fail — save as .docx.
The text is huge and runs off the slide. Select the slides and click Home → Reset, then cut the text down.
Wrapping up
Heading 1 for titles, Heading 2 for bullets, then New Slide ▾ → Slides from Outline. Reset the slides and prune the words. A report becomes a draft presentation in a couple of minutes.
