How to Edit or Delete a Message in Teams (and Undo a Delete)
Typo in a message to your boss? Sent it to the wrong chat entirely? Teams lets you fix or remove messages after sending, and even bring one back if you delete it by mistake.

Edit a message

1. Hover over your message.
2. Click ⋯ More options and choose Edit.
3. Make your changes.
4. Press Enter or click the tick to save. Press Esc to cancel.
The message shows a small Edited label so people know it changed. You can edit a message as many times as you like.
Quick way: press the Up arrow in an empty message box to edit your last message.

Delete a message

1. Hover over your message.
2. Click ⋯ More options and choose Delete.
The message disappears for everyone and is replaced with This message was deleted. People who already read it will have seen it, and anyone who had a notification may have seen the first line.

Undo a delete

Changed your mind? Click Undo on the deleted message placeholder. The option is only there for you, and only until you leave the chat or refresh, so act quickly.

Delete a whole chat

Hover over the chat in your chat list, click ⋯ and choose Delete. This removes the chat from your list only. The other person still has their copy, and you can't delete their side.

Messages in channels

Editing and deleting work the same way in channel posts. Team owners can also delete other people's messages in a channel: hover, click ⋯ and choose Delete.

Troubleshooting

There's no Edit or Delete option. Your organisation may have turned editing or deleting off, or the message is in a channel where only owners can delete. Ask your IT team.
I deleted a message and Undo has gone. Once you've navigated away, a deleted message can't be restored. Post it again.
The other person says they can still see it. Deleted messages vanish from Teams, but emailed "missed activity" notifications and some phone notifications keep a copy of the text.

Wrapping up

Hover, click ⋯, then Edit or Delete. The Up arrow edits your last message instantly, and Undo rescues a deleted one if you're quick. Either way, assume anyone online may have already read it.
