How to Leave a Team or Group Chat in Teams (and Hide Ones You Can't Leave)
Projects finish, roles change, and the team list grows until half of it is noise. Here's how to leave the ones you don't need, and quietly hide the ones you're stuck with.

Leave a team

1. Click Teams on the left.
2. Click ⋯ next to the team's name.
3. Choose Leave the team.
4. Click Leave the team again to confirm.
You stop seeing the team, its channels and its files. Anything you posted stays there for the others.

Leave a group chat

1. Click Chat on the left and open the group chat.
2. Click ⋯ next to the chat in the list (or at the top of the chat).
3. Choose Leave.
A note tells the group you've left. The chat vanishes from your list and you won't get new messages. Again, your old messages remain.
You can't leave a one-to-one chat, but you can Hide it.

Hide a team instead

If you must stay in a team but don't want it cluttering your list:
1. Click ⋯ next to the team.
2. Choose Hide.
It moves into a Hidden teams section at the bottom. You're still a member and still get @mentions. Choose Show to bring it back.

Hide a single channel

Click ⋯ next to the channel and choose Hide. The channel folds away under See all channels but you remain in the team.

If you're the only owner

Teams won't let the last owner leave. Make someone else an owner first: ⋯ > Manage team > Members, change their role to Owner, then leave.

Get back in

• Public teams: click Join or create a team at the bottom of the Teams list and search for it.
• Private teams: ask an owner to add you again.
• Group chats: ask someone in the chat to add you. You'll see history only if they choose to include it.

Troubleshooting

"Leave the team" is greyed out. It's an org-wide team, or one that IT manages through group membership. Hide it instead.
I left by mistake. Ask a team owner to add you back. Your files and messages are still there.
I'm still getting notifications from a team I left. Those are from the meeting chats you were in. Hide or mute them from the Chat list.

Wrapping up

⋯ > Leave the team or ⋯ > Leave for a group chat. If you have to stay, Hide it. And make someone else an owner before you walk out of a team you created.
