How to Make a Call in Teams (Audio, Video and Group Calls)

Not everything needs a scheduled meeting. When you'd rather talk than type, Teams can call someone instantly, with or without video.
Call someone from a chat
1. Open your chat with the person.
2. Click the Video call or Audio call button at the top right.
3. They get a ringing notification and can answer on their computer or phone.

This works in a group chat too: the whole group is called at once.

2. Type a name in the Make a call box and pick the person.
3. Click the Call button.

Your History list sits underneath, so you can redial anyone with one click. Add people you call often under Speed dial.
Call from someone's profile

Answer a call
A notification appears in the bottom corner. Click Accept with video, Accept with audio or Decline.
Keyboard shortcuts:
• Ctrl + Shift + S — answer with video
• Ctrl + Shift + A — answer with audio only
• Ctrl + Shift + D — decline
• Ctrl + Shift + A — answer with audio only
• Ctrl + Shift + D — decline
On a Mac, use Command instead of Ctrl.
During a call
You get the same toolbar as a meeting: mute, camera, share your screen, chat and reactions. To bring someone else in, click People and type their name.
Phone numbers
Calling an ordinary phone number from Teams needs a Teams Phone licence from your organisation. If you have one, a dial pad appears on the Calls page. Without it, Teams calls only work between Teams users.
Troubleshooting
The call button is missing. Calling may be disabled by your organisation, or you're chatting with someone outside it. Try a meeting invite instead.
Nobody answers and it goes to voicemail. Their status might be Do not disturb. Leave a message or send a chat.
No sound on the call. Click ⋯ More > Settings > Device settings and check the speaker and microphone.
Wrapping up
Open a chat and click the camera or phone icon, or use the Calls page for history and speed dial. Ctrl + Shift + A answers a call with audio, and Ctrl + Shift + D declines it.
