How to Pin, Hide and Mute Chats in Teams (Tidy Up Your Chat List)

After a few months, your Teams chat list is a scroll of half-remembered conversations. Three small options sort it out: pin what matters, hide what's finished and mute what's noisy.
Pin a chat
1. Hover over the chat in your chat list.
2. Click ⋯ More options.
3. Choose Pin.
2. Click ⋯ More options.
3. Choose Pin.
The chat moves to a Pinned section at the top of the list. You can pin up to 15 chats and drag them into any order. Choose Unpin from the same menu to remove one.
Hide a chat
Finished with a conversation but don't want to lose it?
1. Hover over the chat and click ⋯.
2. Choose Hide.
2. Choose Hide.
The chat vanishes from your list, but nothing is deleted. If the person messages you again, it reappears automatically.
Find a hidden chat
Type the person's name or a word from the conversation in the search box at the top of Teams. Open the chat, click ⋯ at the top and choose Unhide.
Mute a chat
A group chat that pings all day can be silenced without leaving it:
1. Hover over the chat and click ⋯.
2. Choose Mute.
2. Choose Mute.
You still receive the messages and a bell-with-a-line icon shows it's muted. You just stop getting notifications. Choose Unmute when you want them back.
Mark as unread
Need to come back to a message later? Hover over the chat, click ⋯ and choose Mark as unread. The chat turns bold again like a new message.
Filter the list
Click the filter icon at the top of the chat list to show only Unread chats, Meetings or Muted chats. Great for a quick morning catch-up.
Troubleshooting
I hid a chat and now I need it. Search for it and choose Unhide. Hidden chats are never deleted.
A pinned chat has disappeared. Pinned chats sync across your devices, so check you haven't unpinned it on your phone.
Muting didn't stop the notifications. Someone @mentioned you. Mentions always come through unless you also change your notification settings.
Wrapping up
Hover over any chat, click ⋯, and choose Pin, Hide or Mute. Pin your daily contacts, hide the finished stuff, mute the chatter, and your Teams list becomes something you can actually use.
