How to Record a Microsoft Teams Meeting (and Find the Recording)

Recording a Teams meeting means nobody has to scribble notes, people who couldn't attend can catch up, and you've got a record of what was agreed. Here's how to start a recording, where it ends up, and what to do if you can't find the button.
Before you record
• Tell people. Teams shows a banner to everyone when recording starts, but it's polite (and in many places a legal requirement) to mention it first.
• Check you're allowed. Your organisation decides who can record. Usually the organiser and other people from the same company can; guests can't.

Start recording
1. Join the meeting.
2. In the meeting controls, click ⋯ More (or More actions).
3. Choose Record and transcribe.
4. Click Start recording.
2. In the meeting controls, click ⋯ More (or More actions).
3. Choose Record and transcribe.
4. Click Start recording.
A red dot appears at the top of the meeting and everyone sees a notice that the meeting is being recorded. Depending on your settings, a transcript may start at the same time.
Tip: If you set up the meeting, you can make it record automatically. Open the meeting in your calendar, click Meeting options, and turn on Record automatically.
Stop recording
1. Click ⋯ More.
2. Choose Record and transcribe > Stop recording.
2. Choose Record and transcribe > Stop recording.
The recording also stops automatically when everyone leaves the meeting.
Where to find the recording
Once the meeting ends, the recording takes a few minutes to process. Then you'll find it:
• In the meeting chat — open the chat for that meeting and click the recording to play it.
• In the Recap tab — open the meeting from your Teams calendar and click Recap for the recording and transcript together.
• In OneDrive — for normal meetings, it's saved in the Recordings folder of the OneDrive of the person who started recording.
• In SharePoint — for meetings held in a channel, it's saved in the channel's files, in a Recordings folder.
Share the recording
Everyone invited to the meeting usually has access automatically. To share it with someone else:
1. Open the recording (from the chat or OneDrive).
2. Click Share at the top.
3. Add the person and choose whether they can view or edit.
2. Click Share at the top.
3. Add the person and choose whether they can view or edit.
Download a recording
1. Open the recording in OneDrive or SharePoint.
2. Click Download (or ⋯ > Download).
2. Click Download (or ⋯ > Download).
You get an MP4 video file you can keep or upload elsewhere.
Recordings can expire
Many organisations set Teams recordings to expire after a set time (often 120 days) to save storage. You'll see the expiry date in the recording's details. For anything important, download a copy or ask the owner to change the expiry date in the recording's details panel.
Troubleshooting
There's no Record button. Your organisation may not allow you to record, you may be a guest, or you may be using a personal Teams account that doesn't support it. Ask your IT admin.
The recording isn't in the chat. Give it a few minutes — long meetings take longer to process. Check the OneDrive Recordings folder of whoever pressed Record.
Only part of the meeting was recorded. Recording stops if the person who started it leaves and everyone else leaves, or if someone clicks Stop. Start it again if needed — you'll get two recordings.
Wrapping up
⋯ More > Record and transcribe > Start recording — and tell people first. Afterwards, look in the meeting chat or Recap tab, and download anything you need to keep before it expires.
