How to Record a Presentation in PowerPoint (With Voice and Video)
Can't present live? Need a training video, a course lesson or a recorded pitch? PowerPoint can record your voice, your webcam and your slides together, then save the whole thing as a video anyone can watch.

Before you start

• Add your speaker notes to each slide — you'll be able to read them while recording.
• Use a headset or external microphone if you have one. It makes a big difference.
• Find a quiet room and close other apps that might make notification sounds.

Step 1: Start recording

In Microsoft 365:
1. Go to the Record tab.
2. Click From Beginning (or From Current Slide).
If you don't have a Record tab, go to Slide Show > Record (or Record Slide Show).
The recording window opens with your slide in the middle, your notes at the top, and controls at the bottom.

Step 2: Check your camera and mic

In the bottom-right corner, use the camera and microphone buttons to turn them on or off. Click the settings (⋯ or the camera/mic menus) to choose which devices to use.
• Want voice only? Turn the camera off.
• Want to appear in a small bubble? Leave the camera on. Use Camera mode to blur or replace your background.

Step 3: Record

1. Click the red Record button. A short countdown starts.
2. Talk through your first slide.
3. Click the right arrow (or press the right arrow key) to move to the next slide.
4. Keep going until the end, then click Stop (the square).
PowerPoint records each slide separately, so a pause while you change slides won't be recorded.

Use the teleprompter

Click Teleprompter at the top of the recording window to show your notes near the camera, so you can read them while looking roughly at the lens. Use the arrows to scroll and A+ / A- to change the text size.

Draw on your slides

Use the pen, highlighter and laser pointer at the bottom of the window while recording. Your drawings and pointer movements are recorded too.

Redo a slide

Made a mistake? You don't need to start again.
1. Go to the slide in the recording window.
2. Click Clear (or the ⋯ menu) and choose Clear recording on current slide.
3. Click Record and redo just that slide.

Step 4: Export as a video

1. Close the recording window.
2. Go to File > Export > Create a Video. (Or on the Record tab, click Export to Video.)
3. Choose a quality — Full HD (1080p) is a good choice.
4. Make sure Use Recorded Timings and Narrations is selected.
5. Click Create Video, choose where to save it and click Save.
PowerPoint creates an MP4 file. A progress bar appears at the bottom of the window — longer presentations can take a few minutes.
You can now upload the video to YouTube, share it through OneDrive or Teams, or send the link.

On a Mac

Go to Slide Show > Record Slide Show. The controls are similar. When finished, export with File > Export and choose MP4 as the file format.

Troubleshooting

No sound in the video. Check the right microphone was selected before recording, and that Use Recorded Timings and Narrations was chosen when exporting.
My camera isn't showing. Close other apps using the camera (like Teams or Zoom). On Windows, check Settings > Privacy & security > Camera allows PowerPoint.
I want to remove all recordings. On the Record tab, click Clear > Clear Recordings on All Slides.

Wrapping up

Record > From Beginning, talk through each slide, then File > Export > Create a Video. Use the teleprompter for your notes, and redo individual slides rather than starting over.
