How to Spotlight and Pin Someone's Video in Teams

How to Spotlight and Pin Someone's Video in Teams
Teams keeps shuffling video tiles around based on who's talking. Sometimes you want one person to stay put, either just for you (pin) or for everyone in the meeting (spotlight).

Pin vs spotlight

• Pin affects only your screen. The person stays large for you, and nobody else notices.
• Spotlight affects everyone. The person is shown large to the whole meeting, and they're told they've been spotlighted. Only organisers and presenters can spotlight.

Pin someone

1. Hover over the person's video tile (or their name in the People list).
2. Click ⋯ More options.
3. Choose Pin for me.
Repeat for up to nine people. Choose Unpin from the same menu to let Teams take over again.

Spotlight someone

1. Hover over their tile or their name under People.
2. Click ⋯ More options.
3. Choose Spotlight for everyone.
You can spotlight up to seven people at once, handy for a panel discussion. Choose Stop spotlighting when you're done.

Spotlight yourself

Presenting without slides and want to be the main picture? Hover over your own tile, click ⋯ and choose Spotlight me.

When to use which

• Interpreter, teacher or lead speaker: spotlight them so nobody loses them.
• You're watching a colleague for cues: pin them for yourself.
• Panel of three: spotlight all three and ask everyone else to stay off camera.

Hide your own video

Separate from pinning: hover over your tile and choose Hide for me if you'd rather not watch yourself. Others still see you.

Troubleshooting

I can't see Spotlight in the menu. You're an attendee. Ask the organiser to make you a presenter, or ask them to spotlight the person for you.
Spotlight isn't working for one person. Their camera is off, so there's nothing to show large. Ask them to turn it on.
The pinned person keeps moving. Switching View modes (Gallery, Large gallery, Together) resets your layout. Pin them again afterwards.

Wrapping up

⋯ > Pin for me keeps someone on your screen. ⋯ > Spotlight for everyone keeps them on everyone's screen, up to seven at once. Use Spotlight me when you're the one doing the talking.
