How to Use Designer in PowerPoint (Instant Professional Slides)
Designer watches what you put on a slide and offers finished layouts for it — a picture becomes a full-bleed background with your title overlaid, a list becomes a row of icons, a few dates become a timeline. Pick one and move on. It's the fastest way to make a plain deck look designed.

1. Open Designer

Click Design → Designer. A pane opens on the right. If you're on a slide with content, ideas appear straight away. Scroll down for more.

2. Give it something to work with

Designer is only as good as what's on the slide:
• A title and a picture — it will crop, frame and position the photo.
• A list of three to six short bullets — it suggests icons and cards.
• A sequence of steps or dates — it builds a process diagram or timeline.
• A quote — it sets it in large type with a decorative layout.
Keep text short. Long paragraphs give it nothing to do.

3. Apply an idea

Click a thumbnail and the slide changes. Don't like it? Press Ctrl + Z and try another. Your words and pictures are never lost — only the layout changes.

4. Ideas from the start

On a brand-new blank presentation, type a title on the first slide and Designer offers whole colour schemes and title layouts. Pick one and every slide you add afterwards follows the same look.

5. Change a design you've applied

Designer ideas are built from ordinary shapes and pictures. Click any part of it to move, recolour or delete it. Home → Reset takes the slide back to its plain layout if you want to start over.

Troubleshooting

The Designer button is missing. Designer needs a Microsoft 365 subscription and an internet connection. It's not in PowerPoint 2019 or 2021.
No ideas appear. Designer works best with the built-in themes. If you're using a custom company template, it may stay quiet. Try a slide with just a title and one picture to check it's working at all.
It keeps popping up uninvited. Go to File → Options → General and untick Automatically show me design ideas. You can still open it from the Design tab when you want it.
The pictures it suggests aren't mine. Some ideas pull in free stock images. Right-click → Change Picture to swap in your own while keeping the layout.

Wrapping up

Put a title and a picture on a slide, click Design → Designer, pick a thumbnail. Thirty seconds, and the slide looks like a designer made it.
