How to Use Zoom in PowerPoint (An Interactive Menu for Your Slides)
Not the video-call app. PowerPoint's Zoom feature puts live thumbnails of your slides on one page. Click a thumbnail during the show and the presentation zooms into that section, plays it, and zooms back out to the menu. It makes a presentation feel like a website rather than a conveyor belt — and lets you take questions in whatever order they come.

1. Summary Zoom — the whole menu in one go

1. Go to Insert → Zoom → Summary Zoom.
2. Tick the first slide of each section you want on the menu. (If you've already got sections, they're pre-selected.)
3. Click Insert.
PowerPoint creates a new slide with a thumbnail for each section — and, if you didn't have sections, it adds them for you. Press Shift + F5 and click a thumbnail: the show zooms in, plays that section, then returns to the menu.

2. Section Zoom — add one section to an existing slide

Already have a title slide you like? Insert → Zoom → Section Zoom, pick a section, and a thumbnail drops onto the current slide. Add several for a hand-built menu.

3. Slide Zoom — jump to a single slide

Insert → Zoom → Slide Zoom, tick the slides. Each thumbnail links to just that slide. Useful for a "deep dive" you only show if asked — put the detail slide at the end, and a Slide Zoom of it on the relevant summary slide.

4. Make it return to the menu

Click a zoom thumbnail and look at the Zoom tab:
• Return to Zoom — after the section ends, come back to the menu. Summary Zoom turns this on automatically; Section and Slide Zoom don't, so tick it.
• Zoom Transition — the animated zoom in and out. Untick it for an instant cut.
• Duration — how long the zoom takes.

5. Make the thumbnails look good

• Change Image replaces the live preview with any picture or icon.
• Zoom Styles and Zoom Border add frames and shadows.
• Resize and arrange thumbnails like any other shapes — Align and Distribute keep them neat.

6. Use it as a running agenda

Put the Summary Zoom slide after your title slide. Present each section from it. When you return, the audience sees where you've been and what's left. It's a visual agenda that also works as a navigation tool for questions at the end.

Troubleshooting

Zoom isn't on the Insert tab. It needs Microsoft 365 or PowerPoint 2019 and later.
After the section it carries on to the next one instead of returning. Tick Return to Zoom on the Zoom tab for that thumbnail.
The thumbnail shows an old version of the slide. Right-click it → Update (or it refreshes when you reopen the file).

Wrapping up

Insert → Zoom → Summary Zoom, tick your section starts, done. Make sure Return to Zoom is on, and your presentation becomes a menu you can present in any order.
