Office 2019 and Office 2021 will stop working on older Macs

Office 2019 and 2021 will stop working on older Macs in June

Starting 13th July 2026, Microsoft Office 2019 and 2021 will enter a “reduced functionality mode” where documents can only be opened and printed but cannot be edited or saved, nor new documents created. Affecting Macs running Mac OS older than 12 (Monterey) as well as iPhones and iPads running Microsoft 365 on iOS 16 and below.

What is the reason?

Microsoft holds certificates that validate the copy of Office, and these certificates expire on 12th July 2026. Microsoft is not prepared to update these certificates on old versions of Mac OS or iOS.

As far as Microsoft is concerned, Office 2019 is End of Life since 10th October 2023 and Office 2021 will reach End of Life by 13th October 2026.

What can be done?

Microsoft suggests you upgrade your Mac OS to the most recent version.

If the device cannot be upgraded, you can use the web based Microsoft 365 from your browser.

Alternatively, buy a newer Mac from somewhere like BackMarket, CeX or eBay.

Upgrading using OpenCore Legacy Patcher may work but will make your Mac noticeably slower as it is not made for the demands of newer OS versions.

For Apple iPhones and iPads, you need to buy a newer device if it doesn’t support iOS 17 or above.

The models include iPhone 11 and newer, iPad Mini 5th gen, iPad 6th gen, iPad Air 3rd gen, iPad Pro 12.9″ 2nd gen, iPad Pro 10.5″ & 11″ 1st gen.

Alternative solutions

You could install a free office package like LibreOffice, or make use of Apple Pages, Numbers and Keynote apps.
