Sandboxie is a piece of software that makes sure everything you download from your computer is stored in a sandbox folder and this keeps these files away from the rest of your computer. You can copy and move files out of the sandbox if you wish to keep them.
Why do I need Sandboxie?
Sandboxie adds a level of protection to your computer by screening any programs and data you download from the rest of your computer.
An example would be a scammer wants to gain access to your computer to pull a remote access scam, you follow their instructions but the scam tool they need to use to access your computer doesn’t install.
What is Sandboxie-Plus?
Sandboxie Classic was released as Open Source but development has ceased on that version. Sandboxie-Plus adds new features to the program, such as:
- Box Snapshots – You can save a sandbox and have different colour coded sandboxes for different applications.
- Integration with Windows Filtering Program – You can decide whether a program will have access to the Internet or not through the Windows Firewall.
In paid versions there is also:
- Privacy Mode – This designates what areas that programs running in a sandbox can access and whether they access them read only.
- Security Enhanced Mode
- App Compartment Boxes
- Encrypted Boxes – You can encrypt boxes to shield confidential data
- RAM Disk – Store your Sandbox in the computer’s memory for faster access than on disk.
- Proxy Injection – This forces programs to use a proxy to connect to the Internet which helps by obscuring IP addresses to provide enhanced privacy without needing a VPN.
- DNS Filter – Control the DNS for programs.
- USB Sandbox – This provides protection from nasties being spread using a USB memory stick by forcing the access via a sandbox.
Downloading Sandboxie
Sandboxie-Plus is available for 64-bit Windows (7, 10 & 11) running on both Intel/AMD processors and ARM processors. There is also a legacy version for 32-bit Windows (7 & 10).
