“Where’s the hash key?” is one of the first questions UK Mac users ask. It isn’t printed on a UK Mac keyboard, but it’s there. So are hundreds of other symbols and accented letters.
The ones everyone asks about
| Symbol | UK Mac keyboard | US Mac keyboard |
|---|---|---|
| # (hash) | Option + 3 | Shift + 3 |
| £ (pound) | Shift + 3 | Option + 3 |
| € (euro) | Option + 2 | Option + Shift + 2 |
| @ (at) | Shift + 2 | Shift + 2 |
| “ (quote marks) | Shift + ‘ | Shift + ‘ |
Not sure which keyboard you have? Look at the 3 key. If it shows £, you have a UK keyboard. If it shows #, it’s a US one.
If the symbols you get don’t match what’s printed on your keys, your Mac may be set to the wrong layout. Go to System Settings > Keyboard, click Edit… next to Input Sources, and add British (or U.S.), then remove the one you don’t want.
