A tri-band Wi-Fi 6E powerhouse on one side, ultra-low-power Bluetooth and Thread on the other

At CES 2026 Espressif showed two chips that take the ESP32 family in opposite directions. Then, in March, ESP-IDF v6.0 added preview support for the low-power H21 and H4.

ESP32-E22: Wi-Fi 6E
The E22 is Espressif’s first tri-band (2.4/5/6 GHz) Wi-Fi 6E chip:
- 2×2 MIMO with 160 MHz channels. Espressif reports up to 2.1 Gbps physical throughput in iperf testing.
- Dual-core RISC-V up to 500 MHz with about 1 MB of on-chip memory
- Bluetooth 6.0 dual-mode (LE + Classic)
- PCIe, USB and SDIO host interfaces
It’s mainly a connectivity co-processor: it gives Linux boards, routers, cameras and SBCs fast Wi-Fi. In June 2026 it received Wi-Fi CERTIFIED status, along with open-source Linux Wi-Fi and Bluetooth drivers. Makers should watch for E22 modules on custom Linux boards and higher-end ESP32-P4 designs.
ESP32-H21: tiny and frugal
The H21 heads the other way:
- a single RISC-V core at 96 MHz and 320 KB RAM
- Bluetooth LE + 802.15.4 (Thread/Zigbee)
- an on-chip DC-DC converter for low-voltage, battery-friendly operation
- 19 GPIO for compact designs
It’s designed for battery sensor nodes: door contacts, buttons, temperature sensors and asset tags.
ESP32-H4: the Thread/BLE specialist
The H4 (announced in 2024, sampling since March 2026) pairs BLE 5.4 with 802.15.4. It’s aimed at low-power Matter-over-Thread end devices.
How to choose
| Goal | Chip |
|---|---|
| Fastest Wi-Fi, Linux co-processor | E22 |
| Coin-cell BLE/Thread sensor | H21 or H4 |
| Wi-Fi + Thread on one chip | C5 / C6 / S31 |
What to do now
- H21/H4: try the ESP-IDF v6.0 preview, and expect Arduino core support later.
- E22: follow the Linux driver work if you build SBCs or routers.
Bottom line: Espressif is no longer “one chip for everything.” There’s now a specialised ESP32 for each end of the power-vs-performance scale.
